Folded 01: A Revolution in Chair Design

Erno Dierckx's Award-Winning Design Challenges Traditional Chair Construction

The Folded 01 design was born from a playful experiment with a post-it note. Dierckx discovered that by folding a square sheet, a rigid shape could be formed. This technique was then applied to create a chair, resulting in a design that is both minimalistic and sophisticated. The chair is constructed from a raw aluminum sheet, hand-bent and mounted on a colored steel frame, reflecting Dierckx's commitment to using honest and durable materials.

The unique properties of Folded 01 set it apart from traditional chair designs. Dierckx's approach strips down the chair to its essence, resulting in a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The chair's subtle color detail adds an element of sophistication, while its durable materials ensure its longevity.

The production of Folded 01 involves hand-bending an aluminum sheet, which is then combined with a colored steel frame. This process, while simple, requires a high degree of precision and craftsmanship. The chair's dimensions are 450mm in width, 500mm in depth, and 800mm in height, making it a versatile piece that can fit into various spaces.

The Folded 01 design project began in February 2018 in Antwerp, Belgium, and was completed in November 2019. It was first exhibited at the Contemporary Design Fair in Brussels. The main challenge faced during the design process was finding a reliable folding technique that would result in a minimalistic yet beautiful appearance.

Dierckx's goal for the coming year is to find the right partner to bring Folded 01 into production and expand the collection to include a table and lounge chair. With its innovative design and award-winning recognition, Folded 01 is set to redefine the landscape of furniture design.
